My Sensory Tools Help Me Through the School Day

My body notices more about the world than most people realize. I feel sounds, textures, and movement all at once, and this is part of how I am made. This sharp sensory awareness means I notice details that many others miss.

The Hallway Is a Lot

The school hallway fills with voices, footsteps, and locker slams between every class. Sometimes my body takes in too much sensory information at once, and I feel flooded. It is okay that this happens — my sensory system is built to pick up a great deal. There are times I squeeze my hands together and look for a quieter place to stand.

School Can Feel Like Too Much

School is loud. My body feels full of noise. This happens sometimes. I squeeze my hands and find a quiet spot.

Finding Out What Helps

My support teacher and I talked about what happens in my body when noise gets too loud. Together, we made a list of sensory tools that help me feel more settled. I can try keeping my noise-cancelling headphones in my bag for loud times at school. Learning my own sensory patterns feels like becoming an expert on myself.

My Teacher Helped Me Find Tools

My teacher and I talked about my body. We found tools that help. Headphones help at school. I am learning about myself.

My Sensory Toolkit

My sensory toolkit includes headphones, a squeeze ball, and soft tag-free clothing. Each tool helps my body feel more regulated when the environment feels like too much. Knowing which tools work helps me make a plan before a hard day begins.

Using My Tools at Lunch

At lunch, the cafeteria is loud and bright, and I put on my headphones right away. My support teacher checked in to ask how my body was feeling in all the noise. I held my squeeze ball under the table and felt my shoulders begin to relax. Using my tools is a natural part of how I look after myself.

I Know Myself Well

I am getting better at noticing when my body needs a sensory break. My sensory tools travel with me now — they are part of how I show up at school. Other people are learning more about sensory needs, and that feels encouraging to me. Knowing myself this well is something I am genuinely proud of.
