Asking to Play at the Busy Park
I am good at watching before I join. I notice what other children are doing. Watching first helps me feel ready.
Illustrations still show Sammy.
One-time per story. Takes about 2 minutes.
I am good at watching before I join. I notice what other children are doing. Watching first helps me feel ready.
I watch first. I notice things. This helps me.
Today the park has lots of children. They are running and calling to each other. I want to play but feel unsure. It is okay to feel unsure sometimes.
Mom: "Sammy, the park looks fun today."
Many children are here. I feel unsure. It is okay.
Mom sits with me on a bench. She says asking is how children join in. Children wait for a good moment first. I can try raising my hand to ask.
Mom: "Sammy, asking is how children join in."
Mom helps me. Children ask to play. Wait for a good moment.
I see Mara building at the sandbox. I wait for a quiet moment. Then I walk over to Mara. I ask her if she wants a helper.
Sammy: "Can I play with the sandcastle?"
Mara: "Yes! There is room here!"
I see Mara. I wait. I walk over. I ask.
Mara smiles and makes room for me. We take turns adding sand. Mom watches from the bench nearby. Waiting for my turn feels good.
Mara: "Sammy's turn to add the sand!"
Sammy: "Thank you for sharing with me."
Mara smiles. We take turns. I wait. It feels good.
Today I asked a friend to play. I waited and took my turn. I made a new friend today. Asking helped me find a friend.
Sammy: "Bye, Mara! Come back soon!"
Mom: "Sammy asked and made a new friend!"
I asked. I waited. I made a new friend!
Take a moment. You can take some slow, deep breaths when you feel ready.
