Did you know that everyone has an invisible bubble around their body? It is called personal space. You cannot see it, but it is there. Sammy is learning about his bubble today.
At school, Sammy is excited to talk to his classmate Priya. He stands very close to her face. Priya leans back. She looks uncomfortable. Her bubble is being squished!
Priya steps back. Sammy feels confused. Why did she move away? When someone steps back or leans away, it means you are too close to their bubble.
Miss Chen sees what happened. She teaches Sammy a trick: stretch out your arm. That is how much space to leave between you and another person. One arm's length is just right!
Teacher: "Try stretching your arm out, Sammy. That is how close is comfortable for most people!"
During circle time, Sammy remembers the arm's length rule. He sits a comfortable distance from the children next to him. Nobody leans away this time!
At break time, Priya asks Sammy to play. He remembers to keep a comfortable distance. Priya smiles. Sammy has a bubble too — other people can respect his space just like he respects theirs. Noticing bubbles can help everyone feel comfortable.
Priya: "Want to play tag, Sammy?"
Sammy: "Yes please!"
